SIA-licensed construction compound security in the UK
SIA-licensed construction compound security in the UK

UK construction sites are losing tools, plant and programme time. Independent 2026 research found tool theft on 57% of sites, with more crews left out of pocket and more projects delayed after crime. Autumn and winter remain the peak months because darkness arrives before the last wagon leaves.

Why construction compounds are being targeted

Thieves now prefer small, high-value tools over copper and timber. Sites without a permanent power supply, a locked compound and a named gate are easiest. That pattern shows up on inner-city frames in Manchester and Birmingham, on logistics sheds around Leeds and Northampton, and on housing phases from Sheffield to Hull.

Budget cuts make it worse. Many contractors have scaled back fixed CCTV even as drone reconnaissance and cloned access credentials become more common. A camera that nobody answers is not a security plan.

What actually works on a live UK site

Start with a drawing, not a slogan. Mark the first gate, welfare, plant compound and fence line. Put SIA-licensed officers on the hours you actually work — day 07:00–19:00 or night 19:00–07:00 — and force a start-shift check at the gate they are standing at.

Reliance Patrol then turns the round into evidence. Officers scan QR checkpoints on a phone browser. GPS has to match the pin. Distances, times and incident photos sit in a client login the same night, which is what insurers and QS teams ask for after a theft.

Cities and project types we cover

We deploy to construction and vacant plots across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Bristol, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Leicester, Coventry, Nottingham, Newcastle, Southampton, Cardiff, Belfast and our home city of Hull. Temporary cover can be stood up in 2–4 hours; planned compounds in 24–48 hours.

If you are writing a tender, ask for licence numbers on profiles, gate geofences, printable QR codes and PDF patrol reports. Paper clipboards cannot prove a 02:14 fence walk in Doncaster or a plant-yard check in Coventry.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need manned guards if I already have CCTV towers?

Cameras record. Licensed officers stop people, lock gates and log incidents. Use both on high-risk winter sites.

Can you cover a site with no mains power?

Yes. Officers still run QR + GPS patrols from a phone. Lighting and a lockable store still matter.

How fast can you mobilise?

Emergency cover in 2–4 hours. Planned 14-day rotas and QR routes in 24–48 hours.
